A lot of times I'll hear a song or an album—for example, the incredible new LCD Soundsystem record—and think, "This is great. I like listening to this at the gym and on my walk to work. Now, if only it were instrumental, I could use it on the show...Daaaaaaaaamn!"
Of course, this is a really bad habit. Mostly because I should stop thinking about work every once in a while, especially while I'm at the gym and supposed to be thinking about what the heck Malcolm Gladwell is doing there. In my gym. Another bad habit: ending all my thoughts with the word "Daaaaaaaaaaamn!" Well, that one's just medium-bad.
The reason the habit is really bad is that unless the record is a hip-hop record on vinyl, the instrumental doesn't usually exist. The artist would have to go back to the original recording and remove all the vocals, which is a pain in the ass.
But sometimes, we get lucky. Early on, when we were collecting music, our director Chris Wilcha called his friend Adam Goldman, who is in an amazing band called Bedroom Walls. Adam graciously set about removing the vocals from every track on their latest album, All Good Dreamers Pass This Way. A dream come true. Listen carefully to the Prologue and to the beginning of Act One. We used their track "Landlord! Watch! Coffin! Angels!" pretty much throughout Kristen's story. At the same time, another editor was working on Act One and used the track in that segment, too. Did you notice? Never too much of a good thing, right? Thanks, Adam!
Also, our old pals Bexar Bexar and John Kimbrough came with it for this episode. If it weren't for these guys, the show would be in major trouble. We probably would have ended up with the Law & Order theme running under everything. Daaaaaaaaaaaamn!
